How Whinging Sets Off Our Nervous System by Nicola Poole

If you’re anything like me then the minute your little one whinges you go into a nervous system response and everything spirals…immediately.

Some refer to this is being in over drive. It’s like the smallest of things can set you spinning out of control. It’s like a certain sound they make triggers your own meltdown, which you know inevitably feeds into theirs.

Let’s face it, life is often full and demanding so as mums we may not always be operating from a centred place of calm. Whilst of course this is the ultimate, it is not realistic day in day out.

But as you take time to reflect on why you feel triggered by your child, there could be a multitude of reasons…
Are you stressed at work and failing to meet deadlines?
Do you have other children wanting your attention and you don’t feel you’re dividing it equally?
Are you worried that any onlookers may judge you as a bad parent?
Do you have a need to always be in control?

These are just a few examples of what may be going on for you. Once you can identify what it is, then you can better get on working to ensure it doesn’t happen as easily next time.

If you’re not coping - ask for help. If you’re worried about what others think, work on your self belief. Children aren’t predictable and we can’t control them. But we can support them and be empathetic. Often too they just want to be heard.

Ultimately though, if you’re feeling triggered, it’s up to you to get beneath what’s going on in order to try and fix this. And remember, there is no such thing as the perfect parent, we are all doing the best we can and I think you’re doing a pretty great job!
